3G Core Network — Western U.S.

Client
Tier-1 wireless carrier
Program value
$800M
Scope
Multi-market core
Region
Western United States

SageTel directed the deployment of a 3G core network across the Western U.S. — one of the largest programs in the firm's portfolio at $800M in total value. The engagement spanned multiple markets and required tight coordination of equipment vendors, physical plant, and market-by-market rollout against a fixed commercial schedule.

Working across distributed teams, SageTel owned the program end to end: sequencing the build, managing vendor delivery, and holding the schedule so commercial traffic could be carried on plan. The result was a regional core delivered on time and on budget, against contracted outcomes.

Los Angeles

SageTel directed a $20M Ericsson 4G core deployment in the Los Angeles market — bringing next-generation mobile capacity to one of the most demanding metropolitan coverage areas in the United States.

The program demanded precise coordination with equipment and network partners and a delivery plan resilient to the density and complexity of the LA market. SageTel managed the deployment to a working 4G core, delivered against schedule and budget.

Scope
Diligence · negotiation · integration

Tied to AT&T's acquisition of the EDGE and Dobson Wireless networks, SageTel led the multi-state E911 technology transition — the emergency-call routing systems that public safety depends on. The firm supported the transaction across its full lifecycle: due diligence and physical-plant assessment, deal negotiation, and leading the implementation strategy and post-close integration plan.

With 60+ stakeholders across carriers, agencies, and vendors, the program's central challenge was alignment: mapping physical plant, reconciling systems, and sequencing the transition so that emergency-call service continued without interruption through the change of ownership.

Scope
Sustainment & vendor mgmt

SageTel designed and led the E911 network sustainment program across 3,000+ Cingular Wireless sites — the reliability engineering that keeps emergency-call service available across a live national footprint.

By building disciplined vendor-management and issue-resolution systems, the program cut operational trouble tickets by 70%, saving millions and materially raising the reliability of the E911 estate. It is the kind of unglamorous, high-stakes work that determines whether an emergency call connects.

Scope
Coverage build-out

SageTel directed a $250M, five-state coverage expansion — extending mobile capacity and reach across a large regional footprint — alongside the deployment of Cisco 3G FEMTO microcell architecture to fill coverage and capacity where the macro network could not reach.

Together these programs illustrate SageTel's range: from large-scale regional build-out to the fine-grained microcell engineering that closes coverage gaps, all directed to a schedule and a budget.

Scope
Product management

SageTel led product management for a portfolio of AT&T's flagship consumer mobile products: AT&T Navigator (turn-by-turn, location-based navigation), FamilyMap (family location services), and Softcard — the AT&T / Verizon / T-Mobile joint-venture mobile wallet.

The firm also launched AT&T's first intelligent couponing and content-delivery platform, bringing location and context to the consumer experience. It is a side of SageTel's work that sits closer to the customer than the core network — but demands the same delivery discipline.
